In 1978, Gartung patented an
adjustable wall-mounted shelf support system which consisted of a vertical
slotted wall mounted support bar, known today as a ‘wall standard' and
shelf support brackets that slipped onto the bar. The support brackets were different lengths
to hold varying depth shelves. This
system is easy to mount and very flexible in design. It can be utilized from floor to ceiling, or
as a single shelf.
The original system, although
clever, did have some problems. The bars are unattractive and the combination
of bars looks unfinished. Hence, this
system has been used primarily as a utilitarian low cost system for garages,
laundry rooms, and out of sight places for simple shelving where decor is not a
consideration.
Another major problem has been
shelf instability. It has been possible
to dislodge shelves from brackets and brackets from the mounting bar if
accidentally hit from below. In the
single slot version, simply loading one side too much can result in the shelf
tipping; additionally brushing against it may knock the shelf and contents off.
Overloading can cause the system to fail by torsion (twisting of the bracket)
and all comes tumbling down, meaning breakables are always in jeopardy.

Our designer worked very closely with a team of engineers to create a heavy duty steel insert, similar to the original design. However, by encasing the steel in injection molded plastic covers, that are then ultrasonically welded, he eliminated the torsion problem. Further, a notch was built into the bracket wall to accommodate the shelf so that a single bracket length can hold a shelf from 8" to 16" (even up to 20" if 3/4 plywood is used for the shelf).
The Integrated Stability Systemtm further ensures the safety and structure. It's the ISS combination of a special 3MR double sided tape along the bracket's shelf, a locking key slipped into the wall standard's slot above the bracket, and the shim that absolutely lock the system into place. There you have it- stability beyond belief!
Because you may cut a support bar to any length, (drilling additional screw holes if needed) you can mount it as a single unit. Also, one bar can be mounted above another and any height can be achieved, allowing for complete design freedom. WallPerfect's bar cover system then sleekly hides the mechanics of the system allowing for a finished look. Because it looks great, only WallPerfect has the additional dimension of being appropriate anywhere in the home or office to become a desk, computer work station, library, bookcase, display area or improved storage..... all at a modest premium price.
